"Dakshineshwar is our heaven on earth; it is our Kailasa, our Vaikuntha."
- SWAMI SHIVANANDA, Direct Disciple of Sri Ramakrishna
The Khirkir Darja
The Math is situated adjacent to the Khirkir Darja (as mentioned in the Kathamrita), also known as the second exit gate of the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. This location bears witness to several significant interactions between Thakur Sri Ramakrishna and his disciples.
The Historical Geography
In those days, the temple had only two main roads connected to its gates. One led towards Kolkata (via the PWD Road), and the other was the path Thakur Sri Ramakrishna frequently used to travel towards the Dakshineshwar village.
Based on various accounts from his life, it can be reasonably assumed that this was his primary route whenever he visited Dakshineshwar or Ariadaha. Old British-era maps (specifically the C.S. Map) suggest that there was no connection between the First Gate and the Second Gate of the Kali Temple through what is now known as T. N. Biswas Road.
This further indicates that Sri Ramakrishna likely used the Khirkir Darja as a regular access point.
